STOURBRIDGE BRANCH - APRIL 2014

Malcolm's Report

What a truly wonderful evening for this meeting without the showers (April).  All the performers were on great form and thus made an entertaining evening enjoyed by one and all.  Although the numbers in attendance were down on the March meeting it allowed extra tunes to be played in the second half.  I made a bit of a mess of my first number as I had not memorised all the words but I corrected that on my next number.  It is great to see some of Billy Uke Scott's numbers featured.  He wrote an umber of tunes which are seldom heard now a days.  Garry Lynall had to go before he was due on stage, which brings me to another point - if for any reason a performer has to go early please inform the person who is compiling the list at the start so that person can be on stager early. Apologies were received from Bernard Francis (his place was taken on the washboard by Zack Evans). Apologies were also received from Dave and Jane Partington, and Bob Elwell. It was nice to see Pam and Dave Jenkins from Leamington Spa, doing two numbers I like very much "Dream a Little Dream" and "See You in my Dreams".  Matthew Richards did sterling work on the Keyboard, he is a wizard on the keyboard in accompanying everyone - sometimes tunes he has never heard before. Very special thanks Matthew.  Also thanks to David and Christine for the PA and adjusting the microphones. All these things help to ensure smooth running of the evening, that includes collecting names. Details of forthcoming events - 'Old Time Music Hall' supper and cabaret at Little Hereford Village Hall on Saturday 28th June 2014 at 7.00pm. Featuring stars from Far and wide, including the Archer Brothers from Little Hereford who have been to our Branch meeting. I have passed by that Hall very many times in the 55 years on route to Leominster, don't foprget the Thursday night meeting by the Leominster & District Uke Group at the White Lion, Etnam Street, Leominster. If you should be early in the area the steps cafe in West Street next to the The Talbot do some excellent light meals (Gloria (my sister in law) keeps it but she will be retiring soon.  The George Formby Socieity doe snot seem to be having much luck lately with members passing away (John Beck, Cyril Palmer - no relation - and like myself the wife of Alan Chenery after 48 years of marriage, she had been confined to a wheelchair for a long time and will be very sadly missed at the meetings. I do keep in contact with Alan, we are both going through the same trauma of losing our loved ones after many years, condolences are sent to him from the Stourbridge Branch.  Finally I must thank everyone for attending and sterling work Gabriela does in collecting names of artists to appear.  Last but not least thanks also go to John and Angie and Bar Staff at the Summer House for the use of the room.  Turned Out Nice Again - Roving Report - Malcom Palmer.

The Hippodrome Project has had good news, it's only in a small way. The list is now complete for the SVR 1940s weekend and the Buttermarket Organ Concert on 18th May - Phil Kelsall MBE will be performing.
